Let’s talk about getting a traffic ticket in New Orleans. You’ll receive your ticket and need to appear at the New Orleans traffic court.

Municipal & Traffic Court of New Orleans

1601 Perdido St, New Orleans, LA 70122

(504) 658-8500

https://www.nola.gov/traffic-court/

The court is right underneath the underpass behind the big court that everybody knows- the criminal court at Tulane and Broad st.

There are no free parking lots around traffic court. There’s some small amount of parking in the neighborhood near the courts for free, but be very careful. Be warned,  there’s a lot behind the traffic court that is not parking for the public and will absolutely boot you. A lot of people find out the hard way, instead of paying $5 they end up having to pay $90 to get a boot removed, or you can get a ticket from the meter maids. No free parking available at the New Orleans traffic court.

The New Orleans traffic court is a two appearance system. Make your first appearance to set your court date, then return on your court date to speak with the Assistant District Attorney and judge.

There is a date at the bottom of your ticket that is basically your appear by date. As long as your ticket is entered into the court system, which can take several days, you can show up at the court anytime before your appear by date to set your court date. You can always call the court to ask if your ticket is in the system, ask for any other information regarding your ticket and process. When you arrive for the first date, you enter into the clerk’s office room 108, speak with the clerk and set your second appearance date.

Your ticket is placed in a division. At the time of this post there are a few divisions that determine the time of your second appearance:

Divisions of New Orleans Traffic Court

  • Division A with Judge Sens at 9:00am
  • Division B with Judge Jones at 9:00am
  • Division D with Judge Shea at 9:00am
  • Division E with Judge Early at 9:00am
  • Division F with Judge Landry at 3:00pm
  • Division G with Judge Jupiter at 2:00pm
  • Division H with Judge Cade at 2:00pm

When you arrive for your second appearance, you will speak with the Assistant City Attorney. The goal is to get your moving violation reduced to a nonmoving violation so it does not affect your insurance rates and driving record. Of course getting your ticket dismissed is also a possibility. Traffic tickets as moving violations can have unforeseen consequences later in your professional and financial life so do your best to work something out with the Assistant City Attorney.

Talking with the judge

If you and the Assistant City Attorney come to an agreement, you will speak with the judge and your payment plan will be set. You usually have thirty days to make your first payment and you can pay every month online until complete. You go to either room 106 or 107 to set up this payment plan.

If you do not come to an agreement with the Assistant City Attorney, you will go to trial. This is less likely if this is your first appearance at traffic court. If you go to trial, both you and the court are given a courtesy continuance/postponement, and if either side requests that continuance, you will return for a third date for your trial.

Fight your ticket

If you want to fight your ticket, which you really should if it’s a moving violation, take the time to get it reduced. If you don’t have the time, won’t be available, hire an attorney. It’s not expensive, and the consequences of letting a moving violation hit your record can be more significant than you would think, and by the time it happens, it can be a lot of work to undo it.
