Why you might want to invest in a dash cam

Hi, my name is Heather Ford and I am a traffic attorney in the city of New Orleans- also known as the Traffic Ticket Lady. Today I would like to talk about why investing into a dash cam can be a good investment.

Some tickets I handle quite a bit are accident tickets. This is where a dashcam could be helpful to maybe even prevent a ticket from being issued in the first place. When you have a two-party accident, it’s really a he said-she said situation and you may have an officer trying to determine what happened. 

Sometimes it won’t turn out in your favor. It may be that the other person ran the stop sign but based on the way the evidence appears, the officer decides to give you the ticket.Those tickets can be difficult to get dismissed. 

There are some things we can do: we can always request discovery, try to evaluate and find out if there’s video, but if you have a dashcam and are able to show the person on the scene what happened, maybe there is nothing to argue about.

Dash cams are very inexpensive, between $50 and $200, and they can prevent you from having an accident charged against you, your insurance points going up, and you wouldn’t have to necessarily deal with the traffic ticket in court. It could save you a lot of time and money. 

Dash cams are not perfect and it also means that the converse is true. If you were the one who ran a stop sign or ran a red light, the other person’s dash cam can be used as evidence against you. As someone who talks to a lot of people who get tickets and who is at fault is difficult to say, dash cam evidence could really help you out. In a perfect world, maybe it will prevent you from having that ticket in the first place.
