Is it really worth fighting a speeding ticket?

A question that I am asked often: Is it worth fighting a simple speeding ticket? Maybe you were going 10 or 15 miles over and you acknowledge for yourself that you were speeding. Is it worth trying to fight that or should I just pay that ticket?

In Louisiana, the answer to that question is usually going to be yes for two main reasons. One, you want protect to your driving record. You never know if you might get a job that deals with driving, or they maybe want to give you a company vehicle, or they need you to drive as part of your duties and having a clean driving record is gonna be really essential in getting those positions.

And the other even bigger reason is going to be insurance. Insurance in Louisiana is extremely, extremely high. And sometimes people, particularly in the past who haven’t paid tickets and gotten in a lot of trouble when tickets come up, they just wanna resolve them, they pay them. They are thinking “Hey, I’m being responsible. I’m taking care of things” and that’s great. But the problem is when it’s time to come renew their insurance, their rates might jump up 30, 40, 50 percent. And they are so high, they struggle to pay them.

And in Louisiana, if you don’t pay your insurance, you get hit with insurance cancellation fees, when it’s time to renew your license, and it can be very expensive. If you let your insurance lapse for over 30 days, it’s not uncommon to see a charge of $525 on your driving record that you have to resolve before you can be able to get your license renewed.

So, if you have a speeding ticket, I would strongly encourage you to either hire an attorney or go to court yourself and see if you can get it reduced to a non-moving violation. Even if you were speeding, it’s gonna save you a lot of money in the long-run. You make a short-term, small investment in the beginning and it can save you hundreds if not thousands of dollars depending on your driving record.
