A mayor’s court ticket is still a conviction if you pay it. It closes the ticket, but it goes on your record for three years and raises your insurance. A town court is smaller than a district court, but the consequences of a guilty plea are not. Before you pay, let us look at it.

Facing a Ticket in Lutcher?

If you were cited by Lutcher police inside the town limits, your case is heard at the Lutcher Mayor’s Court, not the parish courthouse in Convent. Mayor’s courts handle violations of town ordinances and traffic tickets written within the town, and they run on their own schedule. The Law Office of Heather C. Ford handles Lutcher town-court cases and can appear for you.

What a Mayor’s Court Can and Cannot Do

Mayor’s courts in Louisiana are creatures of state law (R.S. 33:441 and following), and their power is limited on purpose. Knowing those limits is often the key to handling the case well.

  • Ordinance and traffic only. A mayor’s court hears violations of town ordinances and traffic tickets written inside town limits.
  • No DWI, felonies, or juvenile cases. Those must go to the 23rd Judicial District Court. A DWI never belongs in a mayor’s court.
  • Limited penalties. A mayor’s court can impose a fine of up to $500 and up to 60 days in jail per offense, with probation up to six months.
  • A mayor or a magistrate presides. Some towns appoint a licensed attorney as magistrate to hear cases in place of the mayor.

Your Right to Appeal to District Court

This is the protection most people do not know they have. If a mayor’s court convicts you, you have the right to appeal within 30 days to the 23rd Judicial District Court, and that appeal is heard de novo, meaning the district court tries the case fresh as if the mayor’s court decision never happened. That right is real leverage, and protecting it is part of how we work a town-court case.

Why a Lutcher Conviction Costs More Than the Fine

Because Louisiana has no license point system, drivers assume a small town ticket is harmless. It is not. A traffic conviction is reported for three years and your insurer uses it to raise your rate, often by more than the ticket itself. Getting the charge reduced to a non-moving violation, or kept off your record under article 894, is usually worth far more than it costs.

How We Handle Lutcher Cases

We enter as your attorney, appear at the Lutcher Mayor’s Court for you, and work with the prosecutor for a dismissal or a reduction that keeps the conviction off your record. If the town court will not offer a fair result, we protect your right to take it to the 23rd JDC on appeal. Miss a court date, though, and you risk a warrant and a license suspension, so do not ignore it.
