Hi, this is Heather Ford, and I’m a traffic attorney out of New Orleans. You’d be amazed at how many people find out their driver’s license is suspended when they get pulled over by a police officer. And you might wonder, like, “How does that happen?” But let me just explain. For example, maybe you had an old traffic ticket that you were going to pay, and the court date kept getting moved around, so you forgot about it. Typically, around here, we had Hurricane Ida in the fall, and so maybe he had a court date, but the court is closed, depending on which court, for a couple of months all the way to the beginning of the year. And it just kind of slipped your mind: you have more important things to deal with. But you get pulled over maybe for a speeding ticket, and you find out your license is suspended.

So one of the things you can do is to check on the status of your license, and if your license is out of Louisiana, you can go to expresslane.org. It is operated by the Office of Motor Vehicles, also known as the DMV. So, you can go and check your status by putting in your driver’s license number and the last four of your social security number. Then, it will let you know if you have any what they call flags.

Some flags will suspend you. So, if you forgot to pay a traffic ticket or if you have to go to court or something like that. That will be a suspension, but then other things that will prevent you from being able to renew your registration, like insurance cancellation will block your license and registration renewal, so it’s better to find out in the comfort of your own home than to find that out on the side of the road.
