Your Louisiana driver’s license is suspended but you have never had a license. How, Craig?

I want to discuss how a Louisiana license can be suspended even if you never had never been licensed. This is something I’ve seen come up a few times.

This problem can present itself in a few different ways where people who either have never had a license before go to the DMV, try to get a license, and turns out they’re suspended. Or maybe they’ve never had a license in Louisiana before but they’ve lived in the state. Later, they come back to Louisiana trying to get a license and they’re told they’re suspended when they go the the DMV. So what’s happening here?

In Louisiana, if you receive a ticket and you don’t go to court, the court may then send notice to the DMV. And that notice is basically a way to suspend you in the system for your failure to appear. And if you have a license, then that traffic ticket goes on your license and it creates a flag. So, what happens if you don’t have a license?

Well, if you don’t have a license, Louisiana will create a temporary driver’s license number for you so they can suspend you in the system as well. And so, that’s how you can go down to the DMV and get caught off guard. You’ve taken the classes, completed the driving hours, and passed your test.
You head down to get your shiny new license for the first time and they’re like, you have to resolve these traffic tickets. And it often takes people by complete surprise.

But that is the problem that needs to be solved. So if you’ve had a traffic ticket and you failed to appear or maybe you didn’t finish making your payments on the ticket, and you’ve never had a license in the state, they still can suspend you in the system. And the way to resolve the matter is to either go get a new court date or actually get that ticket paid. However, be careful as paying some tickets may suspend your license for an additional year.

So if this something you need help with, I’d be happy to assist. Again, shoot me a quick text or phone call or you can schedule a free strategy session at trafficticketsnola.com.

“I will definitely use her again if need be!”

I was thrilled when Heather was able to get my ticket reduced to a non-moving violation and the judge waived fees. I never thought that was possible. I was certain I'd have to pay something. She's great...
